Laurence McGivern took almost two seconds off his personal best to qualify sixth fastest into tonight’s final of the men’s 100 metres backstroke S9 in the Aquatic Centre at the Paralympics.
The Newry man finished fourth in his heat in a time of 1.05 and goes in the final at 6.30pm this evening.
Johnathan McGrath just missed out on the final of the men’s 400 freestyle S8 when he was placed ninth after the heats.
Elsewhere, Bethany Firth, a genuine medal contender, finished second in heat two of the women’s 100 backstroke S14 and qualified fourth fastest for tonight’s final at 7.38pm.
