Leona Maguire moved right back into contention for an Olympic golf medal after shooting a six-under-par 65 in the second round at the Rio course.

The Cavan golfer opened on Thursday with a disappointing three-over 74 but the amateur world number one posted seven birdies in her impressive round with just the one dropped shot en route to her 65.

Maguire jumped into the top 25 following today’s round and now sits seven shots off the gold medal going into the weekend’s action.

Compatriot Stephanie Meadow was also looking for a better round to improve on her opening 77 and the Portrush golfer opened well, starting with three birdies in her first five holes.

Meadow handed one shot back on the back nine, making bogey on the 11th but responded with three birdies in a row on the 15th, 16th and 17th and sits on one over at the halfway stage in a tie for 38th place.

American Stacey Lewis posted the round of the day with a stunning 63, which included 11 birdies.

The former British Open champion sits in silver medal position on nine under behind leader South Korea's Inbee Park on ten under par.

Britain's Charley Hull and Canada's Brooke Henderson are tied for third on eight under.
