Sara Treacy has had a disappointing run in the 3000m steeplechase final finishing 17th.
In a race run at near world record pace Treacy, from Co Meath, was at the back from the start in the 18-woman field, with Bahrain’s Ruth Jebet easing to the gold medal coming home over seven seconds ahead of nearest rival Hyvin Jepkemoh of Kenya.
The USA’s Emma Coburn took bronze.
Treacy, who lives and trains in the UK, finished nearly a minute behind Jebet in a time of 9: 52.70. The victor’s time of 8:59.75 was just a second outside the world record.
27-year-old qualified doctor Treacy made the final after a successful appeal following her fall after being tripped in the semi-final on Saturday.
The classy field proved too much for Treacy to contend with in a race that was run a t a blistering pace by Jebet that saw Treacy cut adrift from the the main pack from early on.
Switzerland’s Fabienne Schlumpf finished last in 18th spot, seven seconds behind Treacy.
