Sport Ireland has been informed by Michael O’Reilly’s legal representative of his intentions to appeal his provisional ban, which prevents him from boxing at the Olympics.

The 23-year-old from the Portlaoise Boxing Club has been provisionally suspended from the Games after testing positive for a banned substance. 

An independent disciplinary panel is likely to be convened early next week to hear that appeal.

It is not necessary for O’Reilly to reveal the grounds for the appeal at this stage.

The main grounds for appeal could include therapeutic or medical use or inadvertent use of a banned substance.
