Irish high jumper Adrian O'Dwyer, from Kilkenny, has crashed out of the Olympics after failing to clear his opening height of 2.10 metres in qualifying.

The measure was a good 20 centimetres short of the 20-year-old’s man's personal best and he will leave Athens bitterly disappointed by his performance.

O'Dwyer had gone to the Greek capital full of confidence and was ranked joint-11th in the world this season.

In March, he narrowly missed a medal at the World Indoor Championships.
