Conor McGregor’s reign as two-division world champion has come to an abrupt end as the Dubliner has been stripped of his UFC featherweight belt.
News that McGregor had “relinquished” the belt was announced on Saturday by the governing body, however, the Irish fighter has yet to comment.
And no doubt, McGregor will have his opinions on the decision to promote former foe Jose Aldo to “undisputed champion”, as the reigning lightweight champion recorded a first-minute stoppage over the Brazilian when taking the featherweight title last December.
But McGregor never defended that title, instead moving up two weights to fight Nate Diaz, before dropping back to lightweight to recently take the belt, beating Eddie Alvarez.
The official UFC website stated: “World lightweight champion Conor McGregor has vacated his featherweight title and opted to keep the 155-pound title he won by defeating Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 on 12 November.
“Interim featherweight titleholder Jose Aldo has now been elevated to undisputed champion, and following these developments, the interim UFC featherweight title will be on the line on Saturday, 10 December, as Max Holloway and Anthony Pettis battle for championship gold in the new main event of UFC 206.
“The winner of the five-round bout, which will be held at Air Canada Centre in Toronto, will face Aldo in 2017 for the unified belt.”
