Cavan golfer Leona Maguire has moved to the top of the women’s world amateur rankings.

Twenty-year-old Maguire, who along with her sister Lisa plays with Duke University in the US, moved to number one in the rankings, swapping places with Andrea Lee after winning the NCAA South Bend Regional at the weekend.

Maguire beat former world number one and Duke team-mate Celine Boutier by a shot in the tournament, after rounds of 72, 68 and 72 left her on a winning total of four under par (212).

Speaking to RTÉ Sport, Maguire said: "It’s really nice, it’s something I’ve been working towards for quite a few years now so to finally get there...it’s a bit weird but it’s nice."

Asked how her game has changed recently, she said: "I think I’ve just been really consistent; I haven’t been making a whole lot of mistakes.

"I’ve been making a lot of birdies and trying to limit the bogeys.

"I’ve been hitting a lot of greens and giving myself a lot of chances of holing a few putts. I was just trying to eliminate all the little quirks out of my swing to try and get it as consistent as possible."

Leona's sister, Lisa, moved up 36 places to 814th.
