Offaly’s Rory Hanniffy has retired from inter-county hurling after 14 years on the county panel.

The Birr clubman made his debut for the Faithful County in 2001 and lined out in his 45th and final championship appearance for Offaly in the All-Ireland Qualifier defeat to Tipperary in July.

The former Offaly Hurler of the Year’s retirement comes in the wake of Hanniffy being left out of manager Brian Whelehan’s 34-man training panel, which has already started preparing for the 2015 season.

Although a versatile and highly gifted hurler, All-Ireland honours with the Midlanders eluded Hanniffy, who captained Offaly in 2007 and won Allianz Hurling League Division 2 honours in 2005 and 2009, as well as Leinster minor and U21 medals in 2000.

Brother of previous county players Gary and Darren, Rory won All-Ireland club medals with Birr in 2002 and 2003.
