Cillian Farrell has stepped down as Meath hurling manager.

The former Offaly dual star made his decision in the wake of the county’s 0-23 to 1-10 loss to Down in the Christy Ring Cup semi-final on Saturday.

Farrell said: “I was initially appointed for two years and the lads had asked me to stay on for a third, but I have been under pressure this year.

“I have enjoyed it thoroughly, I had a great group of lads to work with, but I'm back in college part-time and I'm under pressure, and I think maybe it's time for a fresh voice as well for the lads.”

In April Meath lost the Allianz League Division 2B promotion play-off to London.
