RTÉ Sport understands that Declan Ryan is set to be appointed by the Tipperary County Board to succeed Liam Sheedy as manager of the county’s hurling team.

The Clonoulty-Rossmore clubman was a stalwart on Tipperary sides from the late 1988 to 2001, winning All-Ireland medals in 1989, 1991 and 2001. He also collected two All-Star awards in 1988 and 1997.

Tommy Dunne, who captained Tipperary to the All-Ireland title in 2001 and was involved with the county’s All-Ireland winning U-21 team this year, is to be appointed coach.

Ryan and Dunne succeed Liam Sheedy who stepped down after guiding Tipperary to the All-Ireland hurling title this year. Sheedy cited work commitments as the main factor in his decision to resign from the post.

This is the second time that the duo have succeeded Sheedy at the helm of an All-Ireland winning Tipperary team.

Sheedy guided Tipperary to the All-Ireland minor title in 2006, but resigned shortly after the victory due to family commitments. Ryan and Dunne took charge and led Tipperary to another All-Ireland minor title in 2007.

The Tipperary County board has stated that no manager has yet been appointed, and any appointment will have to be ratified at a meeting of the county board.
