Clare's double All-Ireland winning goalkeeper Davy Fitzgerald has announced his retirement from senior inter-county hurling.

Fitzgerald made the annoucement following training on Monday evening, and took the decision after suffering a serious hand injury while playing for his club Sixmilebridge.

Widely considered one of the best goalkeepers of modern times, Fitzgerald helped Clare win All-Ireland titles in 1995 and 1997 and has been named in the All Stars team three times.
