Waterford IT dethroned reigning Fitzgibbon Cup champions Limerick IT in a thrilling final this afternoon at Cork IT.
It went to a second period of extra-time before Colm Bonner's side broke clear to claim WIT's first title since 2006.
Despite Galway underage star Joe Canning scoring 1-16 in a game that was riddled with frees, LIT were pushed all the way and hung on to a slender lead late in normal time, with a good defensive display also by Tipperary's Shane Maher at centre-back.
However, Shane O'Sullivan popped up with a point to ensure extra-time would be on the cards for two teams, who had played their respective semi-finals just 24 hours previously.
WIT had already beaten LIT by 0-16 to 1-12 in the round robin stages of the competition and again in today's game there was very little to separate the sides, with an Eoin Reid goal the decisive score.
Canning hit seven points during the opening half, including three line balls and a superb 100-metre strike as LIT took a 0-09 to 0-07 interval lead.
WIT continued their good form on the restart with a brace of points from Eoin Reid, including a superbly struck sideline cut, to level the contest for only the second time inside three minutes.
Nothing could separate the sides over the following 10 minutes, before Canning blasted a 30-metre free straight to the net.
However, WIT failed to give up with an inspirational display from half-back and captain Kevin Moran who scored two excellent points in the second half, and an O'Sullivan point levelled the tie, two minutes into injury-time.
Although Canning had time to put LIT back in front, a fourth Eoin Reid point for WIT booked extra-time.
The sides were again inseparable after the first period of extra-time with an O'Sullivan point, two minutes into injury time, ensuring another period.
Two quick points on the restart saw LIT break clear, but WIT were strongest in the closing five minutes with Reid's goal sealing a fabulous win.
