Waterford defender Fergal Hartley has retired from inter-county hurling - for the second time in two-and-a-half years.

The Ballygunner clubman, who initially called time on his career in July 2003 following the Deise's unexpected All-Ireland qualifier defeat by Wexford, feels he has no more to offer Justin McCarthy's side.

Turning 34 next month, Hartley skippered Waterford to glory in the 2002 Munster SHC final, earning himself the right half-back berth on the Vodafone GAA All-Stars team of that season.

Hartley is still expected to have an involvement with his club Ballygunner, for whom he won the man-of-the-match award at centre back in last month's Munster club final loss to Newtownshandrum of Cork.
