Calls for referees in Gaeltacht areas to polish up their Irish

A motion is to be brought to the Galway County Board recommending referees avail of language support, up to and including Irish lessons, to assist them when officiating at games involving teams from Gaeltacht areas.

It comes after a club from Rosmuc, Na Piarsaigh, lodged a complaint after they claim they were told to stop speaking Irish by a referee during a recent championship match.

An official investigation is now underway about the allegation, and it's hoped it will be completed by Friday morning.

A football club from Leitir Móir, Naomh Anna, first mooted the motion, and were supported by another club based in the Gaeltacht, Cumann na Fairche.

If the clubs decide to go ahead with this motion, they will have to bring it before the Referring Committee and the Management Committee.
