David Power has stepped down as manager of the Wexford senior footballers with immediate effect.

Power, who at 31 became the youngest senior inter-county manager in the country when he succeeded Aidan O'Brien in the Slaneyside post in 2014, has also left his position as junior and U21 boss.

Power, from the Kilsheelan-Kilcash club in Tipperary, cited a lack of ‘time and energy’ required for the job as a reason for stepping aside.

Meanwhile, Wexford PRO Rory Murphy acknowledged Power’s work at underage level in the Model County.

The former Tipperary minor All Ireland winning manager is credited with being “proactive in the development of a new group of young Wexford footballers” and bringing “players from the U21 squad through the junior teams that have won back-to-back Leinster titles and many have progressed to senior team.”

Power said: “I feel that I can no longer devote the necessary time and energy required for these positions and with that in mind I have decided to step aside.

“I would like to sincerely thank the Wexford GAA board for giving me the opportunity to manage their senior team, and also the junior and U-21 sides.

“It has been a tremendous honour for me to be involved with the three teams and I enjoyed every minute of the job.

“I would also like to thank the Wexford players for all their hard work and I want to wish them every success on the playing fields and in their future careers.

“My back-room team put in tremendous amounts of work and showed immense dedication and they were of huge assistance all the way through.”
