Cork 1-20 Monaghan 1-13

Colm O’Neill scored 1-08 as Cork ended their three-game losing run in the Allianz Football League Division 1 by overcoming Monaghan at Páirc Uí Rinn today.

As with the game against Dublin at Croke Park last week, Cork raced out of the blocks and had 1-05 on the board before their opponents had registered a score.

While Monaghan did threaten a fightback coming up to half-time, the margin between the teams was never narrower than four points and Cork managed the game effectively in the second half.

O’Neill was in sparkling form and his goal in the seventh minute capped a blistering start.

Already four to the good, Cork pressed home their advantage as captain Paul Kerrigan found Peter Kelleher with a good direct ball and the full-forward laid off to O’Neill, who produced a strong low shot to the corner of the net.

While Conor McManus helped to get Monaghan off the mark, Cork were comfortable as Mark Collins put them 1-10 to 0-03 ahead in the 29th minute, but a lapse in concentration allowed Monaghan to get a foothold in the match.

After the Farney men’s corner-forward Drew Wylie was fouled deep in Cork territory, McManus quickly took the free to find Conor McCarthy in space and he fired past Ryan Price in the home goal.

That inspired them and further points from Darren Hughes and McManus (two) had it 1-10 to 1-06, but Cork steadied and finished the half with points from Collins and O’Neill.

The home team began the second period with points from Colm O’Driscoll and O’Neill and though McManus replied with his fifth, the tide was with Cork.

They eased nine clear as O’Neill got his seventh point, while Kevin O’Driscoll joined his two brothers on the scoresheet and the game meandered to an inevitable conclusion.
