Eamonn Burns has been installed as Down fooballers’ new manager.
Burns won All-Irelands with the Mourne County in 1991 and ’94 and he takes over following Jim McCorry’s largely unsuccessful spell in charge.
Burns is a member of the Bryansford club and is a well respected figure within Down, having played in their most recent Sam Maguire triumphs.
Down made the 2010 All-Ireland final under James McCartan, where they were unlucky to lose to Cork by a point.
But since then the Mourne County have drifted backwards, though they will play in Division 1 of the League next year having earned promotion this season.
McCartan, another double All-Ireland winner from the nineties, has also returned to inter-county management – it was announced on Thursday night that he would be taking over as Down minor boss in 2016.
“Eamonn Burns will undoubtedly bring the same degree of commitment and passion to the job as manager as he did when he was a player and we all wish him well,” said Down County Board Chairman Sean Rooney.
“There is considerable goodwill for Eamonn, James and their teams and we will give them all the support and resources that they will require.”
