Kilkenny 0-26 Galway 2-20 (after extra-time)
Free-taker Andy Gaffney secured an Electric Ireland All-Ireland minor hurling semi-final replay for holders Kilkenny with a dramatic 82nd-minute equaliser at Croke Park.
The Dicksboro corner-forward fired 10 points in total including the crucial leveller from a free at the end of extra-time to keep their dream of a final place alongside Tipperary or Dublin alive.
The second date, at a time and venue to be decided, was what both sides deserved at the end of 80 energy-sapping minutes that saw the teams tied on multiple occasions.
Both sides had their opportunity to snatch victory with Kilkenny perhaps most aggrieved to blow a six-point lead early in extra-time.
Galway fought back bravely and remarkably took the lead late on thanks in part to Cian Salmon's goal before Gaffney struck for the leveller.
Thomas Monaghan's 62nd-minute equaliser initially threw Galway the extra-time lifeline at the end of a tit-for-tat hour's play.
Kilkenny approached the contest following another successful provincial campaign though they didn't produce anywhere close to their best hurling until extra-time. The three-in-a-row Leinster champions accounted for Wexford, Laois and Dublin in their province.
But Galway presumably took heart from a faltering final performance that saw Kilkenny claim a narrow two-point win over a Dublin side that felt they let victory slip.
Galway, in turn, had an impressive All-Ireland quarter-final win over Limerick and brought that momentum to bear in the early stages at Croke Park.
Jeff Lynskey's side moved two ahead thanks to a point within 10 seconds from Thomas Monaghan and another from Brian Concannon.
They ran with pace and purpose at Kilkenny's rear guard and moved 0-7 to 0-3 clear by the quarter hour mark with Monaghan and Evan Niland registering a brace of points each.
Kilkenny responded with a burst of four unanswered points, three from free-taker Andy Gaffney to tie it up at 0-7 apiece.
But Galway were the better side in the opening half and deserved their 0-10 to 0-8 interval advantage thanks to scores from Concannon and Niland in injury-time.
Galway would remarkably go almost 20 minutes without scoring in the third quarter of the game though and Kilkenny seized the opportunity to take control of the game.
The Cats fired five points without reply to firstly level it up at 0-10 to 0-10 after 37 minutes and then kicked on to edge three clear.
Richie Leahy, Michael Cody, Shane Mahony, Gaffney and Conor Doheny were all on the mark though the game generally lacked a vital spark.
Galway provided an inspirational moment in the 49th minute when Niland and Salmon combined to play in Monaghan for an expertly worked goal.
It tied the scores up at 1-10 to 0-13 and they were level four more times in the remaining 10 minutes.
Monaghan ultimately took the game to extra time with a 62nd-minute Galway point from a tight angle on the left.
But Kilkenny found their stride quickly in the extra period and those six points in a row put them into a big lead.
Galway fought all the way though and Salmon's 78th-minute goal, a wonderful double on a long ball into the danger area, set up that thrilling conclusion.
