Laois hurling manager Seamus 'Cheddar' Plunkett has tendered his resignation, reportedly citing lack of control of his players as his reasoning.

According to the Irish Mirror, Plunkett resigned after players from his squad played games for their clubs just under two weeks before the county's Leinster quarter-final against Offaly.

The O'Moore County face their neighbours on Sunday 7 June after emerging from the Leinster qualifier group alongside Westmeath.

The Laois County Board said in a statement that Plunkett had made the decision due to personal reasons.

The board thanked him for "his contribution to Laois hurling over the last number of years" and said that they looked forward to working with him again in the near future.

Laois selector Ger Cunningham will take charge of the side on an interim basis following the resignation for the upcoming clash with Offaly in Portlaoise on 7 June.
