Donegal were goal-hungry, while Tyrone dug deep in extra-time as both claimed away wins in the Nicky Rackard Cup on Saturday.

Ronan McDermott bagged four goals as Donegal claimed a 6-12 to 2-13 win over Monaghan in Clones.

Ray Durack’s side were five points in arrears at half-time but launched a strong comeback in the second half, scoring five goals, including three from McDermott.

Monaghan started well and led by 1-10 to 1-05 at half-time.

Niall Garland placed the ball in the back of the net after just five minutes before McDermott bagged Donegal’s opening goal after 16 minutes.

Trevor Hilliard’s side looked good, and with Ronan Meegan impressing, they moved five points clear at the break.

Donegal fought back and levelled at 1-10 apiece, with a Sean McVeigh point after 46 minutes.

Indeed, the visitors registered 1-06 without reply at the start of the second half, including a McDermott goal, as they pushed 2-11 to 1-10 in front after 49 minutes.

Garland’s second goal cut the gap to a point four minutes later, but Donegal weren’t to trail, outscoring their opponents by 4-01 to 0-03 in the final quarter.

McDermott added two further goals, while Ciaran Mathewson and Sean McVeigh also found the back of the Monaghan net.

Donegal will now face Armagh in the semi-finals.

In Swords, Tyrone required extra-time before claiming a 1-21 to 0-20 win over Fingal.

A last-gasp John Michael Sheridan point forced extra-time.

Tyrone were strongest in extra-time, holding their opponents to just two points, both of which came in the first period.

Tyrone will now take on Roscommon next Saturday in the last-four.
