Cork county secretary Frank Murphy has announced his intention to step down from the full-time role.

The controversial figure, who has been secretary since 1973, is expected to vacate the position within the next 12 months, though he could stay another year beyond that. However, Cork sources say this is unlikely.

Murphy, who turns 65 this year, was a central figure in all three Cork player strikes since 2002.

He was urged to step down by the hurlers during this year's bitter dispute with the county board and former manager Gerald McCarthy, but declined to do so.
