Tipperary’s Denis Lynch took the runner-up place in Friday’s Rolex-ranked feature class at the five-star show in Cannes, France, piloting the Calvaro Z gelding Night Train, previously the ride of both former world champion Rodrigo Pessoa and Ireland’s Darragh Kerins.
The 12 year-old gelding, which was purchased by Switzerland’s Thomas Straumann last year for Lynch to ride, came home just over two seconds adrift of French winner Patrice Delaveau and the Selle Francais mare Nayana.
Night Train also gave Lynch an eighth place in Thursday night’s 1m45 class at the French show.
Lynch and Cork’s Billy Twomey, who are now both ranked in the world’s top five, are likely contenders for success in Saturday evening’s Global Champions Tour Grand Prix at Cannes, where the prize money will total €285,000.
