Test cricket decision looming for Ireland

Ireland could be playing in test whites after the 2019 World Cup
Ireland could be playing in test whites after the 2019 World Cup

Cricket Ireland expect a decision on future Test status to be made next month at an International Cricket Council (ICC) meeting in Cape Town.

It has being widely reported that both Ireland and Afghanistan will be promoted to the top tier of nations as part of an extension to the form of the game.

And Ireland chief executive Warren Deutrom expects that there will be positive news in relation to more teams playing Test cricket at that upcoming meeting.

Speaking on NewsTalk's Off The Ball on Wednesday, Deutrom said: "We've been asked to be fairly circumspect about the specifics of what's on the table, but the press release that came out after that said there are going to be more opportunities for more teams in all formats of the game.

"And certainly, if I was to take anything from those meetings, there was positive encouragement towards more teams playing Test cricket."

Should Ireland receive Test status, they would be unlikely to schedule any matches until after the 2019 World Cup.

It had previously been decided that a limited form of Test cricket would be open to the winners of the ongoing Intercontinental Cup, which Ireland currently lead, while Afghanistan are in second place.

"We've got maximum points from out of the seven games and Afghanistan is in second place," added Deutrom.

"So nothing guaranteed but then that's always been the case with Irish cricket. We make sure we do our best to be in pole position when the opportunities come."
