John Joe Nevin has said that it would be a dream to fight for a world title and the 2012 Olympic silver medallist is eyeing an all-Ireland showdown with Belfast’s world featherweight champion Carl Frampton

The Mullingar man made his long-awaited return to the ring last Friday night as he defeated Jesus Lule on points in a six-round super-featherweight bout.

Nevin’s professional career has not gone to plan since securing that Olympic medal as he suffered a gruesome leg injury, which threatened to end his journey through the paid ranks before it ever got going.

But Nevin has painfully put himself through the required rehabilitation to return to full fitness, culminating in the removal of a four-pound steel bar from his leg, which had to be inserted after suffering a double fracture.

“I’m back in the ring and hopefully headlining the show at the SugarHouse Casino on October 28th,” said Nevin, speaking on RTE 2FM’s Game On.

“I’m looking for bigger fights and stepping up in class. I’m going up to an eight-rounder next time and I’m eventually going to drop down to 126lbs, which is Carl Frampton’s weight.

“Carl Frampton is a brilliant boxer and I have lots of respect for him, so everything going well, I’d love to share a ring with him.

“That’s my dream, to box Carl in front of all these Irish fans.”

And Nevin is determined to make the most of his boxing life as the 28-year-old approaches what should be the prime of his career.

“It’s a business. You only have a few years left in this game and you have to make the right choices now and keep away from all the nonsense, and do your thing to be successful.”
