Irish middleweight Michael O’Reilly has qualified for Rio 2016 after defeating Azerbaijan’s Shinebayor Narmandakh in the quarter-finals of the World Olympic qualifiers in Baku.

O’Reilly, from the Portlaoise Boxing Club, joins Paddy Barnes, Brendan Irvine, Michael Conlan, David Oliver Joyce, Steven Donnelly, Joe Ward and Katie Taylor on the plane to Brazil.

The Irish champion, who is guaranteed at least bronze in Baku, will be back in action in the last-four tomorrow.

Tipperary super-heavyweight Dean Gardiner, who is two wins away from securing his berth at the 2016 Games, is also scheduled to fight tomorrow.

Gardiner has absolutely no room for error as only the gold medal winner in the super-heavyweight division will land a much-coveted Olympic spot.
