John Joe Nevin got his professional boxing career off to a winning start with a unanimous-decision victory over his Puerto Rican opponent in Boston last night.

The London 2012 silver medallist beat featherweight Alberto Candelaria at the House of Blues on St Patrick’s Day.

Nevin dominated the six-rounder against his durable opponent.

The final scores read 59-55 across the board for the Mullingar orthodox and two-time Irish Olympian.

“The reception was unbelievable. It means so much to me to win on my professional debut on St Patrick’s Day,” said Nevin.

Dublin light-welter Jamie Kavanagh beat Puerto Rico’s Andres Navarro (80-72,79-73,79-73) to improve to 16 wins on the Boston card.
