Irish steeplechasers qualify for final at European Championships

Sara Treacy, Kerry O’Flaherty and Michelle Finn have all progressed from their heats in the 3,000m steeplechase to reach tomorrow's final at the European Athletics Championships in Amsterdam. 

All three runners produced season's best performances to ensure their qualification.

Leevale's Finn ran in the first of today's heats, finishing fourth in 9:45.93 to qualify for the final automatically.

Treacy and O'Flaherty both went in the second heat, with Treacy finishing in fifth in 9:42.16 to take an automatic spot.

The Dunboyne runner smashed her old personal best by a whopping 1.98 seconds in the process.

O'Flaherty (Newcastle) finished just behind her compatriot in 9:45.53 to qualify as a fastest runner up.

The final takes place on Saturday at 4.15pm Irish time.

Ciara Mageean produced an assured performance to finish in third place in the first heat of the women's 1,500m.

The UCD runner clocked 4:13.16 to qualify for Sunday's final. It was her first time wearing an Irish vest since 2011 due to long-running injuries and her first senior championships experience.

Ballymena and Antrim hurdler Christine McMahon also progressed from her heat in the 400m to reach a semi-final.

McMahon finished fourth in heat four in a time of 57.53 to qualify as one of the fastest runners up.

She will compete in a semi-final on Saturday evening, with the first of three semis going off at 7.20pm.

Earlier Ben Reynolds failed in his bid to qualify from the heats in the men’s 110m hurdles.

The North Down’s sprint hurdler just missed out when finishing seventh in a time of 13.87, a seasons best.

Marcus Lawler (SLOT) went out of the 200m at the semi-final stage, clocking 21.33 to finish 21st out of 24 athletes who took part.

Last up on Friday was Amy Foster (City of Lisburn), who finished seventh in her 100m semi-final in a time of 11.62.
