Pakistan punish West Indies in Karachi

Pakistan bowlers Umar Gul and Danish Kaneria restricted West Indies to 191 for six in reply to the hosts' 304 all out before bad light stopped play on the second day of the third Test.

Gul, who finished with three for 49, ripped through West Indies' top order to leave the tourists on 131 for four at tea before Kaneria, who ended with three for 48, struck in the final session.

The Caribbean side closed 113 runs adrift of Pakistan's first-innings total.

Windies opener Daren Ganga was still at the crease at stumps on 77 not out and the tourists will be hoping he can convert his blossoming innings into a fourth Test century, with them trailing 1-0 in the three-match series.

Chris Gayle and Ganga made a solid start to their reply and West Indies were 42 without loss at lunch after Gayle survived an early scare as he was dropped by Imran Farhat at cover off Gul.

But Gul responded after the interval as Gayle was caught by Abdul Razzaq at mid-on and captain Brian Lara, who scored 216 in the second Test, and Ramnaresh Sarwan, who was making his return after being dropped for the Multan Test, both failed to trouble the scorers.

Gayle and Lara fell in the same over with 51 runs on the board and when Sarwan quickly followed two overs later without any addition to the total, the hosts looked to be set for a substantial first innings lead.

But Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Runako Morton steadied the ship, moving the score on to 114 for three, before Kaneria forced Chanderpaul to push forward and Farhat took a difficult catch at short leg to leave Ganga and Morton to guide the tourists to tea.

The pair moved the score onto 153 for four before Farhat produced another stunning catch at short leg to remove Morton for 21.

Dwayne Bravo also stood firm with Ganga as the score progressed to 190, but fell for eight as an inside edge off Kaneria produced a good catch from Kamran Akmal behind the stumps.

Denesh Ramdin survived 11 balls without scoring before the umpires called an end to play.

Earlier, Shahid Nazir (0), Kamran Akmal (31), Gul (26) had fallen as Corey Collymore claimed three for 57 after Pakistan had resumed the day on 257 for seven.
