Mayo dispense with Exiles' challenge

Mayo advanced to a Connacht SFC semi-final against Leitrim next month after overpowering London in a 1-18 to 0-08 triumph at Ruislip today.

The Exiles, whose one and only Connacht championship win came against Leitrim in 1977, battled bravely but Mayo proved too good. Conor Mortimer's 56th-minute goal topped off a decent display by Mickey Moran's side.

Three points apiece from Mortimer and Ciaran McDonald helped Mayo go in at the break with a 0-10 to 0-04 advantage.

London had a wind advantage in the first half and Noel Dunning's outfit were still very much in the hunt as they trailed by 0-03 to 0-07 after 25 minutes' play. The enigmatic McDonald, listed at full-forward but operating very much in a roaming role, kicked over two early points - one free - to settle his men.

Mortimer, whose two-month suspension for verbally abusing a referee during a colleges game ended last weekend, also landed two points in the opening quarter with Andy Moran, Ger Brady and Alan Dillon sharing out Mayo's other scores.

Former Kildare forward Stuart McKenzie-Smith, who lined out at full-forward, and half-forwards Pat Quirke and Jack O'Murphy notched the London points.

Mayo's six-point lead at the interval would have been more but Mortimer's 14th-minute goal was ruled out for a square ball.

The second half was a ratherless listless affair until Mortimer broke free of his marker to fire past London keeper Brian McBearty, who was making his championship debut.

In fairness to McBearty, he had done his best to keep London in touch with some wonderful saves at the feet of McDonald and left corner forward Austin O'Malley.

Right corner forward Mortimer took the plaudits for Mayo, who face Leitrim at Carrick-on-Shannon on June 25, as he finished with a personal tally of 1-08.
