The Irish Amateur Boxing Association (IABA) have selected a five-man squad for November's World Senior Championships in China.

IABA Director Gary Keegan confirmed yesterday that Ken Egan (81Kg), Darren Sutherland (75Kg), Roy Sheehan (69Kg), Eric Donovan (57Kg) and Conor Ahern(51Kg) would travel to Beijing.

Donovan, Sheehan and Ahern won one gold and two silvers between them at last weekend's Multi Nations tournament in Finland in yet another impressive medal haul for Irish amateur boxing.

Including the Finnish medal haul the IABAs Pre-Elite and World Class teams have bagged an incredible ten gold, five silver and two bronze medals at various Multi Nation and EU tournaments this year.

And according to Keegan, that is the type of consistency that could see Ireland win their first medal at the World Championships since James Moore won bronze in Belfast in 2000.

Keegan confirmed: "Ken and Darren were guaranteed their places on the World Championships team. But Eric, Roy and Conor knew that their selection was contingent on last weekend's Multi Nations in Finland."

He added: "And I am delighted to say that all three responded magnificently and we will have a very confident team travelling to Beijing for the World Championships next month.

"Personally I would be confident that we can bring back medals from China as the team has been consistently amongst the medals against some of the top boxers in Europe this season.

"However, a lot will depend on the draw for the opening rounds in China and fingers crossed when the time comes round that we get favourable draws."

The five-man Irish squad, who will be accompanied by coaches Billy Walsh and Zuari Anita in Beijing, will depart for their Manilla training camp in the Philippines on November 3 and then travel to
China for the World Championships, which begin on November 11.
