Irish rowers qualify for semi-finals
Wednesday, 31 August 2005 12:27All three Irish boats competing at the world rowing championships in Japan have qualified for the semifinals.
The success of the men's four in placing second behind New Zealand in their repechage means that they join the lightweight four and the women's lightweight double in the next round.
It's the first time that Ireland has ever got this far at a world championships with three Olympic boat categories.
And when Niamh Ni Cheillaeachir and the lightweight men's pair of Siaghal MacColgain and Richard Coakley qualified from their own repechages it meant that all five Irish boats in Japan had reached the semis.
Ireland's world class rowers have now achieved their target for the year.
It only remains to be seen whether the lightweight four can fulfil their promise as the best medal prospect after their bronze last month in Lucerne.
