A DUP Assemblyman today wrote to the Gardaí after buses carrying Glentoran supporters were attacked south of the border as they returned from last night's Champions League qualifying match.
Northern Ireland public transport company Translink confirmed that windows were smashed on two buses carrying fans from Glentoran through Dundalk.
However a spokesman for the Gardaí said they had received no reports of any incidents.
East Belfast MLA Robin Newton said the Gardaí should have done more to prevent the attacks, which he claimed were premeditated and motivated by sectarianism.
Mr Newton said the events raised a number of serious questions and he asked why the buses were not escorted by the Gardaí as they travelled through Dundalk.
"Glentoran supporters have said that they saw no evidence of a police presence as they entered the town," he said. "Why were these buses not met and chaperoned safely through Dundalk?"
