'Rogue trader' Nick Leeson has been appointed as Galway United's new commercial manager.

Leeson was a British investment trader whose actions caused the collapse of Barings Bank, the UK's oldest investment banking firm.

Leeson has been living in Galway with his wife Leonie for the past number of years and applied for the position at the club recently.

United, who launched an impressive strategic plan in February, are clearly  intent on building a football dynasty at Terryland Park.

The club's projected annual turnover is E500,000, but officials want this increased  significantly in the next few years.

It is hoped that by 2009, United's annual turnover will be E2m.
