Ethiopian running phenomenon Kenenisa Bekele completed his fourth successive world cross country double in St Ettienne as he won the men's long race at Saint-Galmier in France.

The 22-year-old 10,000m Olympic champion - who won the short race on Saturday - crossed the line well ahead of Eritrea's Zersenay Tadesse in a remarkable performance given that he stopped training for weeks after his fiancee died.

"This is more significant than the previous wins because in the past my fiancee was supporting me," said Bekele, who was with her on a training run when she collapsed and died.

Qatar's Abdullah Ahmad Hassan took bronze while Kenya's best finisher was world 5,000m champion Kipchoge, who was vying for the lead with Bekele going into the final lap but faded badly and finished fifth.

Ethiopia also took the team title, with Kenya taking silver and Qatar the bronze.

Ireland's leading runner was Vinny Mulvey who finished 71st in 38min 58sec.

And in the women's competition, Ethiopia's Tirunesh Dibaba emulated her compatriot Bekele in landing the double as she added the short title to the long one she won in yesterday's race.

Dibaba beat her compatriot Werknesh Kidane, with Kenya's Isabelle Ochichi taking bronze.

Sonia O'Sullivan also won the double in 1998 when the short course race was introduced for the first time.

There was an impressive performance from Ireland's Jolene Byrne, whose 17th position in 14mins 02secs led Ireland into 11th in the team race.
