Athletics Ireland has requested that Maria McCambridge be added to the Irish Olympic team for Athens after she achieved the 5000 metres standard in Belguim last night.

McCambridge bettered the Athens mark by almost three seconds when she clocked 15 minutes 05.86 seconds to finish third in a high-class field in Heusden. Athletics Ireland has confirmed that it will 'make representations' to the OCI that McCambridge be selected.

Currently, 14 Irish track and field athletes are set to compete in Athens. McCambridge's time last night, cut nearly 13 seconds off her personal best which she set four years ago.

Also at last night's meet, Olympics-bound James Nolan finished last of the 14 finishers in the 1500 metres although his time of 3 mins 37.85 secs was a season's best. The race was won by Hicham El Guerrouj in 3 minutes 29.18 seconds.
