Gary O’Neill put Dublin City ahead on 15 minutes after connecting with a Phillip Hughes cross.
After threatening on a number of occasions, St Pat’s got back into the game in first half injury time with their first serious attack on goal.
Dessie Byrne sent a free kick in from deep on the right and Aidan O’Keefe rose highest in the crowded goalmouth to head past City ‘keeper Barry Ryan.
St Pat’s took the lead on 48 minutes when Darragh Maguire connected with David Bell’s corner kick and headed past Barry Ryan from close range.
Roared on from the sidelines by Collins, City pushed forward in search of an equaliser. O’Neill, Hughes and Ennis all had chances but couldn’t penetrate the Pat's rearguard.
They nearly claimed a point in injury time but Robbie Farrell, after beating two defenders, hit the post with his low drive.
