British Open prize money increased

Prize money at The Open Championship this July will be a record £4million - up £100,000 on the 2003 figure.

The winner at Royal Troon is to receive a cheque for £720,000, £20,000 more than Ben Curtis earned for his shock victory at Sandwich last summer.

The Ayrshire course hosts the event for the first time since 1997, when Justin Leonard collected £250,000 out of a total purse of £1.6million.

"We have increased the prize money in line with inflation and this again keeps the Open purse highly competitive," said Royal and Ancient chief executive Peter Dawson.
