All-Ireland champions Galway thrashed Roscommon in the first round of the Connacht championship by seven points. Galway took their time before making an impact into the Dr Hyde Park clash, and it was the home side who had a two-point lead after eight minutes. Derek Savage shot over to put Galway into the lead after 35 minutes and it left them one point in front.
Savage scored the first goal for Galway just before half-time when he coolly slotted home a penalty to leave the score at 1-06 to 0-5 in favour of Galway at the interval. It took Roscommon sixteen minutes before they opened their account in the second half, which in between Padraig Joyce scored a half a dozen points.
Galway manager John O'Mahony brought Alan Kerins into the game and he made an early impact by scoring Galway's scored goal after 54 minutes. Galway oozed class and Kerins grabbed his second goal and Galway's third ten minutes later when he scored an amazing goal.
Roscommon showed little in attack and were nothing like their wining team of last year. Galway will move into the semi-finals were they will face Mayo in McHale Park in a fortnight's time. They will be a much formidable side then that of their Connacht neighbours today.
