Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier last night paid tribute to midfielder Gary McAllister who sent the club into the final of the UEFA Cup with his first-half spot-kick against Barcelona at Anfield. "That's what we signed him for. When things get hot and tense, he is cool and composed," said the delighted Frenchman. "It was decided before the game that he would take any penalties. He may be 36 and he can't play in all the games, but he is still quality with great passing ability and he's so useful when things get tough," added Houllier.
Houllier was pleased with how his team had performed over the two legs against the much-fancied Spanish side. "It was a great European night, and it was a fantastic team performance. There is a resolve and a determination about us, and we have improved tactically as the competition has gone on. The boys deserve a lot of credit. They have now reached three cup finals in a season and it shows we have taken every competition seriously," he explained.
The goal-scorer was also thrilled with the result and his part in earning the victory. "I really fancied the penalty when it came along. The keeper came and had a wee look, but unfortunately for him he dived the wrong way. I fancied it - I fancied it strongly, and it helped us beat a very good team. Our goalkeeper and back four were tremendous. They were playing against the very best in the world tonight and they didn't get many chances. It wasn't about individuals tonight, it was a big Liverpool team performance," McAllister said. "Barcelona had rubbished us and showed a lack of respect. But they are out and we are through to the final," he smiled. (PA)
