Soccer: Fergie rules out finding Ruud alternative

Sir Alex Ferguson hopes Ruud van Nistelrooy will make a full recovery from his cruciate knee ligament injury - and become a Manchester United player. The United boss insists he is still interested in signing the striker, even though he faces up to a year out with the injury. Ferguson maintains that van Nistelrooy remains their number one striking target - and that he does not want to buy anyone else.

Asked on MUTV if he were still interested in completing van Nistelrooy's record £18.5million transfer from PSV Eindhoven, Ferguson replied: “Yes, no doubt. That's a possibility - a big, strong possibility. We're only in the market for Ruud van Nistelrooy because of his age, development and talent. We're not interested in any other striker.”

Van Nistelrooy, 23, ruptured his cruciate during training yesterday and he will require major surgery on his right knee. Ferguson is prepared to wait and he is confident the Dutch international will make a full recovery because of the advances in the treatment of cruciate injuries. He cited the examples of United skipper Roy Keane and England striker Alan Shearer as proof that players can bounce back from this once career-threatening injury.
