Soccer: Football Writers' Association pays tribute to Sir Stanley

The Football Writers' Association has dedicated the game's oldest award to the memory of the late Sir Stanley Matthews. From this season the Footballer of the Year trophy will be known as the Sir Stanley Matthews Trophy. Paul McCarthy, chairman of the FWA, said that Sir Stanley was the first winner of the prestigious award in 1948 and personified the spirit of the award in terms of dignity, excellence and example. The Association feels this is a fitting gesture to the great man's memory.
