Discussion and debate with Joe Duffy

Liveline Tuesday 7 March 2017

Bridget told Joe that she left Ireland when she got pregnant in 1960. She confessed her 'sin' to a priest in London, who arranged for Bridget to be brought back to Ireland. Bridget was picked up at Cork Harbour and taken into the mother and baby home in Bessboro. "We were sitting ducks for the people who wanted our babies," Bridget told Joe. Bridget's baby died there - unnecessarily she says - and now her wish is to be buried with the body of her child.

Fr Paul Churchill's father grew up in Tuam Mother and Baby Home. He spoke to Joe about the positive stories he had heard about the home. Fr Paul had previously questioned the story of mass burials at Tuam.

Catherine Corless, who first discovered the mass burials, rang Joe when she heard what Fr Paul was saying and took serious issue with his version of what happened in the home.
