Story Notes
A co-production with BBC Radio Ulster
In Cathy Moorehead's home the doorbell made the light bulbs flash like a disco and the windows leaked a noisy chorus because no one ever was told to Ssshhh!
After school a pre-teen Cathy might be found battling bank managers, sorting bills or booking hair appointments for her mum.
Growing up the eldest child to deaf parents she often doubled as a radio - transmitting important messages between the world of sound and a world of silence.
In this documentary, Cathy Moorehead opens the door of her home to reveal an exceptional experience shared by a very small group of people who grew up in Ireland as Children of Deaf Adults (CODAs).
In all of their households two languages were exchanged around the dinner table – one spoken with the lips and the other with the hands.
But what were the challenges they faced as families and how were they challenged by the world around them?
In a warm, intimate and often humorous tale, Cathy reveals how these experiences created a unique soundtrack that shaped her life and the life of her parents - ‘In The Loudest House on the Street’.
