Story Notes
The ISPCC Charity trek in Morocco.
On Saturday 5 October 2002, a group of ten intrepid volunteers including RTÉ Radio Sports reporter John Kenny, departed from Dublin for the ISPCC High Atlas Mountain challenge in Morocco. Over the next six days the group, made up of eight women and two men, (including John Kenny) hiked up to seven and a half hours a day scaling heights of around 10,000 feet and down the other side of the Atlas Mountains in Morocco.
The aim was to heighten the awareness of the ISPCC in Ireland as well as arranging sponsorship for the charity that needs 3.75 million a year just to keep pace with their running costs. John and the rest of the group were brought through the week by local guides, staying on mountain-tops and in Berber villages - home of the indigenous people of the Atlas region of Morocco. John Kenny recorded throughout the trek - talking to his guides, those on the trip and the local community they met along the way, in what turned out to be a tough, if memorable week, for those involved.
First Broadcast 30th December 2002.
Produced and Presented by John Kenny.
