Story Notes
Newly elected US Congressman Brendan Boyle’s secret weapon is his father Frank. Frank is from Glencolmcille in Co. Donegal and works as a cleaner in a Philadelphia subway station. Earlier this year Brendan decided to contest the race for the Democratic nomination for the House of Representatives, he wanted to be a Congressman. Political consultants told him he hadn’t a hope of winning the nomination, because his main opponent was Marjorie Margolies, whose son is married to Chelsea Clinton. A seasoned politician, with plenty of money to throw at the campaign,
Margolies would also have the support of Bill and Hilary Clinton. But the political consultants didn’t allow for the pulling power of Frank Boyle - an immigrant from rural Ireland whose son was the first in the family ever to graduate from college.
‘Boyle for Congress’ takes us inside the Boyle campaign. It tells the story of that David and Goliath battle for the Democratic nomination and follows Brendan Boyle, his dad Frank, and their campaign team as Brendan contests the election for the Congressional seat in Philadelphia, and the prize of a political career in Washington DC.
Narrated and produced by Aoife Kavanagh
