Minister for Culture, Tourism and Sport Mary Hanifin said the award will be a welcome boost for cultural tourism in the capital in the coming years.

'Being one of only four cities in the world to achieve the status of UNESCO City of Literature, will enable Dublin to increase its market share of tourists and attract more people to both the city and the island of Ireland,' she said.

The UNESCO City of Literature award is part of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network launched in 2004.

Dublin joins Iowa City, Melbourne, and Edinburgh on the UNESCO list.
