Protest over plans for Glencairne development

watch

There was traffic disruption for a time this morning in the Leopardstown area of Co Dublin, following a protest by local people over a planned new development.

Up to 100 people blocked one carriageway on Murphystown Road, to protest at plans by a developer to build a six-block development including more than 400 apartments at Glencairne. One of the proposed blocks has 17 storeys.

The residents say there is huge local opposition because the plans are architecturally out of context with the area, will lead to further traffic congestion, and because the size of the proposed development is much larger than any other locally.

The plans are currently before An Bord Pleanála, and the residents say that if approval is given it will open the door for a huge number of planning applications for similar high-rise, high density developments along the M50 motorway.

The protestors say they will continue holding rolling demonstrations every two weeks in the morning or evening, until their voices are heard.
