The Government is giving another €40m to the GAA towards the redevelopment of Croke Park brining the total Exchequer funding for the project to €110m, out of a total cost of €265m.

It is understood that there are no conditions attached to the latest grant, half of which will be paid this year, and the remainder in 2005.

The GAA has always argued that it was owed money by the Government because of an agreement reached in 2001, under which the GAA would play a certain number of matches at the proposed National Stadium in Abbotstown.

However, the Government said that this agreement lapsed when it decided in September 2002 not to proceed with the Abbotstown project.
