Second U2 concert sold out

Updated: 20:36, Monday, 9 July 2001

The tickets for the second U2 concert at Slane Castle have completely sold out in just over ninety minutes.

The tickets for the second U2 concert at Slane Castle were completely sold out today in 94 minutes. Tickets for the concert on 1 September went on sale at 1pm today at 65 outlets around the country and on the internet and over the phone.

Thousands of fans were left bitterly disappointed earlier this year after the 80,000 tickets for the first concert, on 25 August, sold out in less than an hour. Meath County Council granted permission for the second Slane date after requesting extra time to consider objections raised by residents.

Tickets, which were limited to 4 per person, went on sale today immediately after the second date was announced. The decision to open box offices straight away was made "in the interest of public safety" after promoters consulted with the Gardaí and Ticketmaster. Support acts on the day will include Moby, Foo Fighters, Nelly Furtado and Dara.

Meanwhile, the Fine Gael TD, Denis Naughten, has criticised the promoters of the U2 concert for what he says was overcharging for tickets sold to fans in the regions. Deputy Naughten says that fans outside of Dublin had to pay £41, while Dublin-based buyers were asked to pay £39.50. Deputy Naughten says that Fine Gael legislation would prohibit promoters from doing this and would also eliminate ticket-touting.
