U2 Ditch Hype After First TV Appearance
On 2 March 1978, a band called The Hype appeared on" Youngline". By the time they won a talent competition in Limerick on 17
March, The Hype had changed
their name to U2.
This clip is taken from the best of "Youngline", shown on the last programme
in the 1978 series. Conor McAnally introduces U2 performing "Street Mission"
and explains how the band have changed their name.
This is U2's first appearance on television. |

"Not A Great Name, If You Don't Mind Me Saying So"
U2 won the "Limerick Civic Week Pop 78" competition in March 1978.
Michael "Micky Mac" McNamara, who was compere that night, recalls seeing U2
play to a small crowd. Although impressed with U2's arrival in a Jaguar and
their sound, Micky Mac didn't think much of the band's name. |
